летать / лететь 은 뜻이 같나요?

В хорошую погоду на остров летал вертолёт. Но сегодня он не мог лететь 라는 문장에서 летел вертолёт. Но сегодня он не мог летать 이렇게 써도 돼요?

A 아니요, 안 돼요.
 летать has more general meaning, when you talk about habitual, repeated movement or about ability to do the movement, so it emphasizes more these qualities then a direction of the movement

летать 에는 좀 더 일반적인 의미가 있어요. 습관적이고 반복된 행동이나 능력을 나타낼 때 씁니다. 

лететь has more certain meaning, when you talk about movement in a certain direction (emphasizing it) or talk about one certain event. 

лететь 는 좀 더 특정한 의미가 있습니다. 특정한 방향으로 움직이는 것이나 특정한 사건에 대해서 이야기할 때 씁니다.

Example
-in general -  Многие люди боятся летать. 
A lot of people are afraid of flying.

-certain event - Многие боялись лететь туда (потому что там война)

Птицы летают в небе - The birds are flying in the sky. Птицы летают на юг каждый год- The birds flies to the south every year.

В небе летят птицы - In the sky the birds are flying to (somewhere). 
Птицы летят на юг - The birds are flying to the south.

in general      -   Я летаю в Москву каждую неделю - I fly to Moscow every week.
certain event -- Мне надо будет полететь в Москву. I need to fly to Moscow.

A man flew to America for the first time
